Things to know

  • The hydrangeas peak in July, carry through most of August, and start to fade around Labor Day - go before they fade!

  • Maresia on Flores was one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to in my life - a must-visit if you go. Each night they cook a different dish (served to all guests) and dinner service continues through the sunset over the Atlantic - incredible vibes

  • The overnight United flight from Newark lands in Ponta Delgada at 8:40 AM is only like 5 hours, so day one is a full day.

  • Weather can change fast, so if you want to see a specific site, you may want to give yourself multiple days / shots at it

  • Most island hopping is short flights, plus the ferry from Horta to Madalena on Pico, but plan carefully as flights aren’t super frequent, so your itinerary needs to be well thought out

Do

São Miguel · 1 night

Stay: Ponta Delgada.

Do: Hired a driver for Sete Cidades, Ponta da Ferraria and Lagoa do Fogo. Miradouro de Santa Iria for views of the cliffs and the ocean.

Sete Cidades is must-see and the most famous vista in the Azores.

Faial and Pico · day trip

Do: Early flight to Horta (7:30 to 8:25), 9:30 ferry to Madalena, 10 AM wine tour on Pico, 3:15 ferry back to Horta, then a gin and tonic at Peter’s. Pico is a huge volcano and has some incredible vineyards - definitely worth staying here for longer than a day trip.

Terceira · 1 night

Stay: Torel Terra Brava in Angra do Heroísmo.

Do: 5:10 flight from Horta. Angra do Heroísmo is a cool medieval-style town. Very neat to bop around here.

Flores · 2 nights (my favorite island)

Stay: Casa do Pátio in Fajã Grande.

Do: 11:35 flight from Terceira, then pick up a rental car for the waterfalls and the two lakes. This island is beautiful and straight out of Jurassic Park - truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. Could have spent a week here.

9 AM boat tour to Corvo the next morning, then a second chance at the waterfalls. Corvo is tiny and super quaint + has a volcano to go visit.

I got dinner at Maresia on Flores both nights. Incredible spot!

Ponta Delgada · 1 night

Stay: Octant Ponta Delgada.

Do: 1 PM flight from Flores. Stop over before heading home. 11 AM United flight home to Newark the next morning.
